Nou Mestalla History
The Nou Mestalla will be the future home of Valencia CF once completed. Work began on 1 August 2007, and is due to be completed in February 2011. The stadium will have a capacity of 75,000. It will replace Valencia's current stadium Estadio Mestalla. The stadium architects are Reid Fenwick Asociados and ArupSport, and the cost is estimated to be ¤344 million. The ground will have a futuristic exterior, clad in aluminium and interior of wood.
The proposed stadium development is on wasteground on the site of a former factory in the neighbourhood of Benicalap, around three miles west of Valencia city centre. It will be one of the largest stadia in Europe when opened. When completed, it will also be a UEFA 5 star venue.
On 26 May 2008, four construction workers lost their lives following the collapse a scaffolding at the Nou Mestalla site. At midday on 28 May, trades union UGT and CC.OO. called a five minute silence for the tragedy, which was observed throughout the Valencian Community in all sectors of industry.
